Tank Lifting Eyes |
1st Job Today was to lift the tank off. These yellow brackets were made as the original ones we made were at Boston Lodge. |
Cab Side |
Its got to go too as the front comes back in over the boiler |
Ready to lift |
Getting the chains to fit was a bit of a puzzle |
The lift starts |
At first it didn't want to come off |
1st Clue |
Here's a clue for the forthcoming boiler weight competition. it will be lifted off with this hoist |

Fetch Hebog |
With the tank lifted it was time for a shunter |

Out of the Shed |
Blanche was pulled out of the shed |
Down the Yard1 |
Blanche had to be moved clear to allow a wagon for the tank to be shunted in |
Down the Yard2 |
It was pulled right down to the yard |
Down the Yard3 |
And was parked by the mainline |
Meanwhile..... |
the tank was dangling from the crane |
Stored |
and then it was lowered on to the wagon and stored in the big shed |
Next off is the smokebox top |
The smokebox is divided into two and the top bit including the chimney has to come off. There is no chance of undoing the bolts so they are burnt off |
More Burning |
Bolts inside and out were burnt out of the smokebox |
Top Clamps |
the smokebox top is clamped on and seal welded. Here the bolts have gone |
Patience ran out |
The blower pipe refused to come quietely so it got torched |
Chimney Off |
Eventually the top was freed and lifted off |
Less of it |
There is getting to be less of the engine |
Header |
With the top off the superheater header is revealed |
Header |
The pipes will split at the horizontal joins and the header will stay with the boiler |
Top Off1 |
With the smokebox top gone the boiler fixings are revealed |
Top Off2
Next off is the boiler just as soon as we get the bolts out |
Rear End 1 |
The boiler is bolted to the frames at the back and sits on these angle plates |
Rear End 2 |
The holes at this end are slotted and the bolts aren't tight as the boiler slides with expansion |
Rear End 3 |
They might not be tight but they are locked and siezed with 10 years of gunge. They wouldn't come undone. Tomorrow they die! |
