Designing a New Boiler - 1

We have drawings that purport to be of Blanche's boiler. We also have drawings prepared in the 60's for the fitting of the new front tubeplate and the new inner firebox. However, even if these were OK they would need updating to modern boiler standards.

To facilitate the preparation of this design we have supplied the old boiler to our boiler contractor as a pattern. These few photo's show the boilers arrival at the boiler works.    -   click on the pictures for a larger view

1.

The lorry that collected the boiler from GyP delivered the boiler to Bartletts the next day

2.

Bartlett Engineering have a very well equipped workshop and that includes an ex Bob Francis road crane

3.

Apparently the lorry driver now knows all about natural draft and the sticky qualities if oil firing soot.

4.

As the lorry drove south the boiler was purged of all its soot by the draft of forward motion and then vortices in the draft landed the soot on the cab

5.

Took three goes with the pressure washer to get it clean!

6.

The boiler is to sit outside the works

7.

They had an easier time lifting the boiler than we did at GyP as the crane could go higher so there was room to use a spreader rig with two slings around the boiler

8.

Up She Goes. Note for boiler guessers - this is when it was weighed. It still has the superheaters in and the the superheater header on the front tubeplate

9.

The other end also still has stuff on such as the gauge frames

10.

Landed. This is where it will sit for the next year whilst the new boiler is made.
